リンゴとリンゴ
これは「似た条件のものを比較する」という意味のイディオム。
この時比較対象は似通ったものであったり同質のものである。
そりゃま、まったく違う二つを比べたらリンゴとリンゴにならないからね。
名詞+to+名詞という形で言えばashes to ashesと同じではあるが
こちらは「灰は灰に帰る」という意味で全く違う意味になる。
（「リンゴはリンゴに帰る」とかにはならない。）
